Project Summary

The D-PEERS (Digital Pathways for Education, Empowerment, and Resilient Skills) project is a 24-month Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education initiative designed to strengthen digital education ecosystems in Sub-Saharan Africa, with a focus on Zambia and South Africa. Coordinated by the University of Ioannina, the project brings together universities and organisations from Europe and Africa to address structural inequalities in higher education, particularly the lack of digital infrastructure, limited internet access, and insufficient digital literacy among students and educators. The project responds to the urgent need for more inclusive, resilient, and future-oriented higher education systems by equipping students, teachers, and institutional leaders with essential digital competences and by improving the technological capacity of partner universities. Its overall goal is to bridge the digital divide and promote equitable access to quality education through innovative, low-bandwidth, and offline-compatible learning solutions. D-PEERS develops a structured framework of digital learning modules covering core digital literacy, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data analytics, programming, and digital entrepreneurship, while also strengthening institutional digital infrastructure such as learning management systems, virtual classrooms, and collaborative online platforms. Alongside student training, the project invests heavily in staff development, preparing educators to adopt blended learning methodologies and modern digital teaching practices. The initiative also places strong emphasis on inclusion, gender equality, and sustainability, ensuring that women and underrepresented groups have equal access to digital education opportunities. Through transnational collaboration, knowledge exchange, and policy engagement, D-PEERS aims to create a sustainable cross-regional network that continues beyond the project’s lifetime, supporting long-term digital transformation, employability, and innovation in higher education across Africa and Europe.
